Many parts requiring aluminum dip braze as an assembly method list exact specifications. Hi-Temp Brazing has compiled the list below as an aid to our customers. Revision levels and authorization to use individual specifications are controlled by various agencies and procuring activities so be alert to possible changes.
Dip braze specs may be prepared, reviewed and used by military agencies who maintain custodial rights for those specs or they may be prepared and used by individual customers, prime contractors, the American Welding Society (AWS) and SAE International (Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS)). Some of the specifications have been superseded by others; most have been cancelled; many may still be listed on documents.
MIL-B-23362 – Military Specification (Brazing of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys
Cancelled – use MIL-B-7883
MIL-B-7883B – Military Specification (Brazing of steel, copper, copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys) Cancelled – use AWS C3.7 for dip brazing
MIL-B-007883C – Military Specification (Brazing of steel, copper, copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys - Cancelled – use AWS C3.7 for dip brazing
MIL-STD-645B - Military Specification (Dip Brazing of Aluminum Alloys
Cancelled without replacement
MIL-STD-454, requirement 59 – uses MIL-B-7883 cancelled spec – use AWS C3.7 for dip brazing
AMS 2673D – SAE Aerospace Material Specification
Active and under review for Rev E
AWS C3.7-90 – American Welding Society Specification for Aluminum Brazing
Superseded by AWS C3.7-93
AWS C3.7-93 – American Welding Society Specification for Aluminum Brazing
AWS C3.7-1999 – American Welding Society Specification for Aluminum Brazing
Superseded by AWS C3.7-99 Superseded by AWS C3.7-2005
AWS C3.7-2005 – American Welding Society Specification for Aluminum Brazing
Active and nsuperceded by AWS C3.7M/C3.7:2011.
AWS C3.7M/C3.7:2011 - Specification for Aluminum Brazing-Approved by the American National Standards Institute October 5, 2011 - Supersedes AWS C3.7M/C3.7:2005
Two of the more significant changes from MIL-B-7883 to AWS C3.7 are as follows:
As related to dip brazing, Hi-Temp Brazing meets all the requirements of AMS 2673D (active), all of the cancelled specs, and both AWS C3.7M/C3.7:2011 and AMS2750. Please feel free to call us with any questions regarding dip braze specifications. We will gladly review your customer specifications for compliance.
All heat treat specs except AMS 2770 are probably obsolete or superseded.
